February 10th to February 24th

Every student in grades K through 9th is invited to participate in the contest.

The contest will only run for only TWO weeks. Reading Logs will be picked on the mornings of February 17th and the 24th.

We will award the following prizes: A top Reader for each grade will be chosen each week and a top class will be chosen on the second week only. We will also choose a top student.

Our school goal is to read a total of 280,000 minutes. If every student reads at least 30 minutes a day for the length of the contest we will be able to meet this goal. Our reward for reaching our goal will be a free dress day .

Rules: The boxes are separated into 30 minute increments. Each box must be initialed by an adult whenever the reading is completed. K-2nd grade may have a parent or older sibling read to them. The remainder of the grades must read on their own. However time spent reading to a younger sibling can be counted. The minutes can only be counted if they are read outside of class time. Book on tapes cannot be counted.

Approval of Minutes: Ryan Hunter voted that we postpone the approval of minutes till next meeting.

Welcome and Call to Order: Carolyn Bayly, Chair

Public Comment: Cyndy Garrison hopes that other languages don’t suffer, Heather Groom represented 5 other families and she and these five families are in support in the Chinese immersion. She spoke in support of the 50 50 model. It will be a great opportunity for the school. Deidre Nelson is feeling undecided. 2 concerns: curriculum integration & staff changes. She would like RA to be a recipe for other charter schools to fix the foreign language program with measurements!

Executive Update:

Mariah asked if the Chinese Immersion program could be analyzed every year and that the board receive a program review every year. Where are the weak links in the program? They happen in the first year. The program is in high demand and we are in a good location geographically to add to its success. The other question Mariah has is from the teacher’s perspective – and having a guest teacher’s program. Build stability in the school and community in creating a commitment for the teachers who will be coming from overseas. Greg Robert’s presentation was very informative and he answered several questions from parents and faculty. Mark feels that we can learn much from the state which will help our language programs across the board. He also hopes to have measureable criteria in place by the beginning of August for Spanish and Arabic so those languages can be evaluated and progress tracked by the administration and the World Language Department.

Ryan made a motion to pass the Chinese Immersion Program for Renaissance Academy beginning in August of 2012. Heather commented that this will be a great opportunity for the students, families and community in opening up future business opportunuites to Utah. All board members voted in favor of supporting the Chinese Immersion Program for Renaissance Academy.

The RA Board Meeting adjourned at 8:45 pm.

December 7, 2011

Dear Renaissance Academy Parents,

I am writing you about an exciting opportunity we have at Renaissance to participate in the Utah State Office of Education’s (USOE) Chinese Dual Immersion Program for the 2012-2013 school year. Gregg Roberts, World Language Specialist with the USOE will be doing a presentation on the dual immersion program this Friday in the Rousseau Room at 5:00 PM. I invite you all to attend. Utah has a nationally recognized program and Mr. Roberts has been instrumental in its development and implementation. This is a great opportunity to learn about the benefits of language immersion and get your questions answered by Utah’s leading expert in this field.

What is dual immersion?

In Utah’s dual immersion model, students’ daily instruction would be divided half in English and half in the target language—Chinese. Target language instruction would occur in mathematics, science, social studies and language arts content areas. Art, music and PE would be conducted in English. The program starts with 50 students in 1st grade, adding an immersion class by grade level in each successive year.

Why immersion?

Decades of research has documented the significant power immersion programs have in driving second language proficiency—only living in a second language environment is as successful. Furthermore, the state of Utah has made a significant investment in the development of a highly recognized immersion model for participating schools. This research based program provides the framework and support necessary to implement a successful immersion program with clearly defined objectives and measurable proficiency results.

Why now?

The possibility of implementing an immersion language track has been discussed at Renaissance for some time. Each year the state accepts applications to the immersion program for the following year. When considering the opportunity this year, there seemed a natural alignment with other strategic initiatives currently underway, such as the grade level expansion plan and development of World Language (WL) standards and proficiency assessments. Once implemented, the immersion model structure would serve as a catalyst for the other current WL development initiatives to improve assessment and increase proficiency in all languages.

What is next?

In order to leverage the opportunity for improvement, last month Renaissance submitted our application to participate in the USOE’s dual immersion program for next year. The application was discussed in our most recent board meeting and generated a lot of excitement and questions. I would welcome your participation in this public dialogue as we continue to study this opportunity.

The window between the application deadline and program orientation is very small. We will have less than two weeks to study details and research answers to our questions. In order to facilitate a public dialogue, accompanying this communication you will find a list of meetings/round-table discussions where you can come with any questions you may have. In addition to other updates, we will post frequently asked questions on the school website for your reference.

At the conclusion of this process, the board of directors will meet on December 20th to vote on the implementation of this program. The evening will start with an “open forum” discussion at 7:30 PM. The official board meeting will start at 8:00 PM and will include time for public comment.

In the mean time, please email your questions and comments directly to me. I would appreciate your feedback and an opportunity to get you the answers you need. Thank you for your commitment to Renaissance. We appreciate the opportunity to provide quality educational opportunities for your students.

Best regards,
Mark Ursic

Attachment: Immersion Q&A 12.12.11

Immersion Program
Q&A

1. In the past year, the school has had numerous changes, why implement immersion now?

Our primary goal is to improve student learning. Modifications in staffing assignments, restructuring of the Special Education Department and implementation of a new teacher evaluation process are some examples of the changes made to foster student achievement. However, in order to continue to effectively manage student performance we need standards, benchmarks and assessment tools to guide us in our decision making. In core content areas standardized tests such as the CRTs provide us with the assessment data that we need.

Our World Language Programs are in need of the same structure and assessment tools to drive language proficiency. The immersion model provides research-based standards, assessments, teacher training and curriculum with a proven track record of generating advanced language proficiency. Creating linguists is a central tenant of our school’s charter. We have made a significant investment in creating and maintaining a World Language Department. We need the structure and systems in place to ensure that our investment is effectively producing our desired outcomes.

Waiting until next year to consider an immersion program means that it could not be implemented until the 2013-2014 school year. That is too long to hold off on improvements that we know we need today. While a Chinese immersion program does not address these issues for all languages taught, it is a significant first step.

2. Where is the research on this to see if this is something already desired among the current families at Renaissance?

An inquiry to all families of kindergarten students (who will attend 1st grade next year) will be sent out on Friday December 10th to gauge the interest level in this program for next year.

3. Will some classes or programs be discontinued to accommodate the implementation of this immersion program?

At this time, it doesn’t appear necessary to discontinue any programs–although we are continuing to study the logistics of its implementation.

4. Will we be dropping Arabic or Spanish?

No.

5. How does this fit into the overall vision of Renaissance?

As stated in item number one, part of our charge at Renaissance is to create linguists. The founders of the school, prior boards and school administrators have invested a great deal of resources to establish a World Language Department to carry out this directive. Research shows immersion programs to be the most effective classroom instruction model for achieving proficiency.

6. What is the value to the existing students, community, and families to have this program in place?

For those in the program, they will benefit from the most effective foreign language acquisition model available to us. However, this program is not for everyone. Based on a family’s educational priorities, the student’s learning style or other needs, the immersion program will not be the best opportunity for every student. While creating linguists is part of our mission, the totality of it is expansive. Some families will want a more balanced foreign language experience and will have that alternative. However, we are committed to implementing standards and assessments for all three of our language offerings as part this initiative. Every one of our 677 students participates in World Language. As a result, the establishment of this performance framework in each language will provide tangible value to every student and family at Renaissance.

7. When will we find out if the Utah State Office of Education (USOE) has approved our application to participate in their Chinese dual immersion program?

USOE has already notified us that Renaissance has been selected as a new Chinese immersion school for the 2012-2013 school year. Our application was approved within one week of submittal—making us the first charter school in the state, approved to participate in USOE’s Chinese Immersion Program. On December 20th there will be a Board of Directors Meeting at 8:00 pm in the Rousseau Room. The board will vote at that time to determine whether we proceed with the implementation of the program.

8. If the state offers immersion programs in Chinese and Spanish—why did we apply for Chinese?

Of the three languages we offer, Chinese is the most requested. Furthermore, in addressing the three languages taught at Renaissance, our charter states:

Our selection of and focus on the less commonly taught languages of Chinese and Arabic will provide an unusual opportunity for learning that may be further fostered through relationships with institutions of higher education in the community such as Brigham Young University (BYU), a designated language Flagship School for Chinese and home of the National Middle East Language Resource Center.

This passage encourages the institution to pursue the unusual opportunities for learning inherent in the offering of Chinese and Arabic language instruction. In considering our options regarding language immersion, our choice was either Spanish or Chinese. Given the popularity of Chinese with our students and the emphasis of Chinese and Arabic in the charter—we submitted an application for the Chinese program.

9. How will learning core content in a second language affect my child’s English language and literacy development?

Research consistently finds that the immersion experience enhances English language development (Cloud, Genesee, & Hamayan, 2000). In Utah’s 50/50 model, where instruction is given in both languages, the program actually provides more than 50% instruction in English

language arts in grades 1-3 to ensure a solid foundation of English language literacy development. 10. How can we physically accommodate the growth in student enrollment for this program?

We can accommodate the addition of this class next year by rearranging some of our existing classrooms. There are a couple of options for this- however a final determination couldn’t be made without having some additional discussion with faculty and staff about the best option.

11. Are you eliminating the middle school to accommodate the growth needs of the expansion of the lower grades/immersion implementation?

No. We need to grow our middle school. In order to do so, we need a separate facility for it to flourish. A new facility is not an immediate requirement to move forward. However it will need to be addressed in the next 3-4 years. We are currently looking into various options to plan for that eventual requirement.

12. If 50 of 100 first graders are in the Chinese immersion program. What are the world language choices for the remaining 50 students?

Those 50 (non-immersion) students will be able to state a preference for either Spanish or Arabic in our traditional world language program. Chinese will only be offered in the immersion environment.

13. I did not receive a link to the video mentioned in the announcement letter sent earlier this week. http://www.youtube.com/UtahPublicEducation/#p/a/f/0/hTG0YFU8vWA
